The Art of Mindful Living: A Call to Inward Reflection and Authenticity

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

In case you haven’t noticed, we are in a bit of a crisis—global wars, environmental disasters, people struggling and suffering everywhere. The rich are getting richer and the poor are just barely getting by.

In a time when we really need to pull together, we are more divided than ever.

Despite all this, I have a lot of hope. I know that we will pull through this time of crisis. I’m not saying it will be easy, but I believe the answer lies in showing up, as women, as our authentic selves, and bringing love to our families, our friends, and our communities. This is the essence of the art of mindful living—tuning into ourselves and making intentional choices that align with our values.

So, in the spirit of living life unapologetically, and showing up vulnerably and authentically, I am issuing a call to action for all of us, because I think we each have a role to play in taking responsibility for our own little corners of the world.

I believe that women are the answer. We are collaborators and connectors. We lead with our eyes on the common good rather than on selfish pursuits. We can run a family or a business with equal dexterity. We are strong and resilient. We birth humans for God’s sake, we nurture children, and we often juggle 17 things at once while pretending it takes no effort whatsoever.

The art of mindful living reminds us to embrace our strength while also honoring our need for rest and renewal.

The world needs healing, and we are the healers.

If that makes you feel weary, like I’m asking you to do more of the same work taking care of everyone else – I assure you that’s not what this is about.

This isn’t about adding one more thing to your to-do list. I’m not going to ask you to get out there and march, protest, volunteer, or start a nonprofit, (unless of course you are moved to do any or all of those things.)

I’m not asking you to take on one more thing – in fact, my call to action is the exact opposite. It’s more of a call to (IN)action.

What I’m suggesting we need in this time of crisis is for each of us, as women, to turn our focus inward.

This is about learning to prioritize yourself right along with everyone else. It’s about setting boundaries, inviting in more of what you want in your life, and eliminating what no longer serves you. For self-compassion techniques, visit The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

It’s really about identifying what lights you up and doing that.

That might look like hunkering down and focusing on the one person you can always count on in your life – YOU. Or, it might involve taking an active role in your community working on a cause that excites you and ignites your passion.

The point is not what you do, but how you show up doing it.

When you are engaged in your life and doing things that leave you feeling inspired, it won’t feel like work. It will feel like ease. You will feel more joy. Learn more about stress reduction at The American Institute of Stress and read expert advice on mindfulness at Psychology Today.

Simply showing up as who you were meant to be is enough. That’s why you are here. This is why we need you. From that place, you will make an impact in the world far greater than you will ever know.

Before you can do that, though, you need to get clear on your gifts and what you want your life to look and feel like. You need to cultivate and protect your own inner peace, which is what we are going to focus on for the next couple of months.

In case you haven’t noticed, this isn’t your typical goal-setting, New Year’s resolution-type activity. Rather than asking you to buckle up and get going, I am inviting you to do the opposite.

The art of mindful living is about slowing down to listen, to reflect, and to make choices from a place of inner wisdom.

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

Commit time to listening to yourself for a change. Tap into what you want and need. Look at your calendar and find 10 minutes a day, for a minimum of 5 days a week, to sit in quiet reflection.

Whether it’s early morning, before you go to bed, or even during your lunch hour, do it when it feels the best for you.

This will become a timeframe you’ll dedicate to practices I will share during the next 6-8 weeks – all of which will focus on slowing down and turning inward. The art of mindful living starts with this small commitment to yourself.

I hope you’ll join me!

Bridget
