How Personal Growth Activities Can Help You Find Peace in Difficult Times

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Wow, as I look back over this month’s blogs – ones that I’m writing in mid-January – I can understand why I am so tired!

Climate change, politics, human rights violations, wars – it’s a long list, one that’s enough to make you feel totally out of control and hopeless.

If you let it.

But remember, as hard as it is to be in the midst of all of these things, it is still possible to be calm in your heart.

As I shared earlier, I have cried more in the past two weeks than I have in months. I have worn out my loosies (aka comfy clothes), drank countless cups of tea, rage-painted, and napped – all in the name of cultivating and protecting my peace. These are all personal growth activities that help me process emotions in a healthy way.

Maintaining a sense of peace within all comes down to the actions you choose to take, the values you commit to, and the compassion you hold for yourself and others. Peace comes through letting your anger, tears, and rage flow – whenever you need to, and for as long as you need. Prioritizing personal growth activities can support you in this journey, helping you build resilience and emotional awareness.

Be patient with yourself – and remember:

Community and connection are more important now than ever. As tempting as it may be to hunker down and isolate yourself from everyone and everything, resist the temptation to do so. Find a cause you care about and volunteer. Go to church. Go to a book club. Get out into the world. Even though it may feel like the last thing you want to do, intentional connection is crucial for maintaining a sense of peace. Note: the keyword here is intentional. There is no need to pile on a list of obligatory events when they do nothing to nurture and nourish you.

Lean into those who love you. Call a friend and talk about how you’re feeling. There is something very healing about processing your feelings out loud. Not only will it help you feel better, but it will also give them permission to do the same. This simple yet powerful act is one of the most effective personal growth activities for emotional well-being.

Be patient with yourself and others. Remember this: the things that fire you up – the ones that get you reacting versus responding – never really go away. You will never be completely free from those things that evoke a human reaction, after all, you are a perfectly imperfect human, surrounded by millions of other perfectly imperfect humans.

Those things will continue circling back around to you again and again, as though the universe is testing whether you’ve evolved in your way of dealing with them. If a situation feels hauntingly familiar and has you thinking, “Oh God. Here we go again,” pause for a minute and ask yourself how you can show up differently this time around. You may surprise yourself!

Don’t rush through the hard feelings. When we’re hurting, we have a tendency to want to muscle through so we can move on to the next thing as quickly as possible, because we don’t like being in pain or uncomfortable. But that doesn’t really work.

Giving yourself time and space to process your emotions is a critical part of moving through them. As the old adage says, ‘what you resist persists.'  Feelings not dealt with when they come up will almost certainly show up in different ways down the line. They’ll continue causing havoc and disruption in your life until you allow yourself the time and space to actually move through them.

That’s why incorporating personal growth activities into your routine is so important—it gives you tools to process emotions in a healthy and constructive way.

Above all, live, learn, and clean up any messes that happen when you’re acting out of alignment. Cry when you need to. Get curious.

Then get back out there and do it again. You’ve got this.
