How to Be Grateful in Tough Times - What you Resist will Persist

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Sometimes when times are really tough, and we’re struggling with something, it can be hard to focus on the things in our lives we should be grateful for.

Natural disasters, the pandemic, unexpectedly losing a loved one to illness. Sometimes it feels like life has wound up and kicked us below the belt.

Some people try to blame it on bad luck or think fate has dealt them an unfair blow. Stuck in their pain, they think, Why does this keep happening to me?

And there they stay, like a broken record on repeat, thinking about their circumstances from a victim mindset of scarcity and lack.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that when life gives us lemons we can’t feel sad or in shock or angry about a situation – especially at first.

But ask yourself this – How will that mindset serve you in the long run?

Do you want to be stuck on that hamster wheel of negativity going around and around with no end in sight? Will that make it easier to deal with whatever crisis you have going on in your life?

Ummm….well…no.

So, next time you are juggling life’s lemons why not try this instead.

Focus on why is this happening FOR you?

By shifting your perspective to one of gratitude and by having faith that there is a larger purpose at work you can get context - even through the darkest of times.

Now, this isn’t at all about blocking negative emotions. Remember that what you resist persists. Sometimes you just need a good cry and to feel and acknowledge those emotions to move through them and heal.

‘Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never, ever have enough. — Oprah Winfrey

Monday Mindshift

This week I invite you to shift your mindset from what is this person or situation doing TO me and instead consider what it may be doing FOR you.

Sometimes not getting what you want turns out to be for the best in the long run.

Can you think of a time when this turned out to be true?

Go on and be grateful!
