Your Magenta Monday Magic.

January is when I usually start talking about setting your intentions for the year. But this year, I’d like us to take a cue from nature and just settle in for a bit—to rest, nest, and nurture ourselves through winter self-care.
If that concept brings a sudden rush of panic, don’t worry. I got you.
We are going to slowly meander through what it means to slowwww downnnnn and take a minute (or several) for yourself. This is not going to be a month of do, do, do. At least as far as this blog is concerned.
I mean think about it….what is happening in nature this time of year? Do you see flowers blooming and trees leafing? Even here in sunny southern California, those days are a couple of months off.
No, winter is for resting. For going within. For cocooning and hibernating. The way I see it, Mother Nature has been doing this for a lot longer than we have, so shouldn’t we take a cue from her? Learn more about seasonal self-care here.
Earlier this month, I talked about how the world needs us to show up. That doesn’t necessarily mean physical.
What we’re going to focus on over the next several weeks is how to cultivate peace within ourselves—because that’s where true winter self-care begins.
When you have peace in your heart, you are better able to roll with whatever situations, transitions, or flat-out bulls**t the world is dishing out.
And the world is certainly dishing out a lot of crazy stuff right now.
There are times when it feels like too much. I remember not too long ago I was struggling with all the suffering in the world. I felt helpless. I felt guilty for living a beautiful life when others could barely get food on the table or clean water to drink. Here’s how to manage feelings of overwhelm.
I was paralyzed by, ‘Who am I to live a beautiful life when so many don’t have that luxury?’. It was not a great place to be.
I realized that from that place I was no good to anyone. And my beautiful life? It would start to suffer as well.
So I got curious about how I could shift that mindset.
I nestled into my cocoon and started doubling down on the things that brought me joy. I got curious and explored the things that fed my soul. I committed time to doing those things as often as I could. This was my first step toward winter self-care and it changed everything.
One day it might be reading for 15 minutes, another it was breaking out my paints to play.
I noticed that over time, rather than feeling guilty, depressed, and helpless, I started to see beauty in the little things that were around me every day. The birds, the sunrise, the clouds in the sky.
It created space for me to let in more of the things I loved, and through that process, I found peace.
Wars continued to rage. People continued to suffer. I still had a business to run and kids to worry about and a mother-in-law to check in on. But rather than get mired in helpless, overwhelmed misery, I found renewed energy.
I could more clearly see how I could contribute to the world on a bigger scale, simply by elevating my own joy, love, and passion in my own corner of the globe.
The peace, love, and joy we’ve been taught to covet, isn’t ‘out there.’ It’s in each of us. But as we live our lives taking on the roles expected of us, we lose sight of that.
And now, through winter self-care, it’s time to get it back.
Monday Mindshift
It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.
So, if you’re game, let’s take it down a few notches following the holidays, settle in, get comfortable, and see what beauty we can cultivate from the inside out through intentional winter self-care.
Are you with me?
Think about what brings you peace. Is it in nature? Is it practicing religion? Is it spending time with friends? Is it painting or pottery or drawing or writing? Is it meditating working out or cooking? Is it reading?
Make a list of those things that speak to you - even if you haven’t done them before. If it sounds remotely interesting as something you’d like to explore, write it down.
Take some time over the next few days and weeks to think about this question and write down whatever comes up. I find using the notes app on my phone really helpful.
Because when we take the time to pause, reflect, and care for ourselves, we create a space for joy, clarity, and peace to enter. And that, my friends, is the true essence of winter self-care.
