The Power of Single Tasking: Breaking Free from Hustle Culture

Hamster on Wheel

Productivity = success, right?

Well, that’s what I’ve always thought….have you ever stopped to question the whole idea though?

According to Dr. Meisha-Ann Martin, hustle culture was driven by the 1990s tech boom, and “glamorized overworking, promoting the idea that constant productivity is a badge of honor that sits at the cornerstone of success and innovation.”

Martin writes how we were taught that in order to achieve our professional goals, we had to constantly strive to perform, quite often at the expense of our own well-being and mental health.

Whether or not you worked outside the home, the messaging was clear, and the ‘push, drive, strive’ mentality led us to see ourselves as lazy unless we were constantly moving and shaking.

As women, we also took on the additional burden of being taught to prioritize everyone else’s needs over our own. It’s no wonder we’ve ended up depleted, endlessly running a hamster-wheel-pursuit of productivity.

It’s exhausting, and it’s time to send that myth packing.

If you’ve been with me for any length of time, you know how I feel about learning to prioritize our own needs. It is critical to creating a life you love.

That’s why I’m turning the focus towards slowing down and turning inward.

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

As women, we’ve long been responsible for taking care of the needs of everyone around us, often while simultaneously pursuing career success ourselves. We have lived and breathed productivity, to the point where most of us aren’t even aware we’re multi-tasking 24/7 – it’s just become our standard operating procedure. (Research shows it’s harming us).

I’m going to invite you to do something different now, in the name of shifting out of the productivity-focused mindset.

Once a day, try stepping out of the hamster wheel to spend some time single tasking.

It might feel lazy, irresponsible, unproductive, or even selfish – but I encourage you to embrace it, slow down, and experience what it’s like to do one thing at a time.

Single tasking allows you to be fully present in the moment, eliminating the overwhelm that comes with juggling too many things at once. Pay attention to what you’re feeling and thinking as you move through these slow moments each day. Enjoy that first sip of your morning coffee. Savor every bite of your delicious sandwich. Notice what is happening around you as you take your morning walk.

By practicing single tasking, you give yourself permission to focus deeply, recharge your energy, and truly connect with your daily experiences. And see how it brings you more deeply in touch with the present moment.

In that time and space that you dedicate to being non-productive, you might find it surprising just how much you’ll accomplish through single tasking.
