Here we are rounding the final corner of the year. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, where has 2023 gone?!


I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the more quickly time seems to go. What does that have to do with this month’s conversation about health? Well, for one thing, none of us are getting any younger! Which means that any actions you choose to take (or not take) today will have a lasting impact on your life going forward.


Now, don’t let that freak you out! Although I want to convey a sense of urgency, I also want you to understand that YOU have the power to shape how the next chapter of your life will look.


YOU are EMPOWERED by the CHOICES you make.


I know, sometimes it might not feel like you have much choice in how your days unfold. It might seem like you spend most of your waking hours reacting to one thing after another, whether you’re tending to the needs of your kids, your partner, family members, employees, or colleagues….


As women, we are natural-born caregivers and nurturers, and our own needs often get lost in the busy, pinball machine of our lives.


We bounce from event to event, crisis to crisis, baseball game to baseball game, while constantly putting ourselves on hold. It becomes so automatic that we often don’t even notice we’re doing it. In the meantime, guess who gets pushed to the back burner over and over and over again?


That’s right! YOU!


The good news? It’s entirely possible for you to choose something different. In fact, this is the perfect time of life to do just that!


Chances are, if you’re reading this email, you’ve probably reached middle age or are getting close. Either way, you’re facing a time of some pretty significant change. This is when recognizing and exercising choice – to whatever level is possible for you – is key to empowerment.


Empowerment is what will make your life your own again.


This month we’ll look at how the choices you make on a day-to-day basis can put YOU back in the driver’s seat of your life and lead you through a beautiful transformation – while also making your life enjoyable along the way.


 

Monday Mindshift


It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

Take a minute to think about where you want to be in 5 years. How do you want to feel as you age? What types of activities do you want to do? Who do you want to be with?


Next, think about the choices you need to make today to make that possible for your future self.


Do you need to get a handle on your diet and exercise? Or maybe you need to have that knee replacement surgery you’ve been putting off? Is it time to book a long overdue dental appointment?


These are the choices you can make TODAY that will have a long-lasting impact 1, 2, or even 5 years down the road.


Here are some other ways you could invest in your overall well-being and sense of fulfillment – choices aimed at giving you more time and energy for the things that really matter:


You can choose:

  • to say no to attending the holiday party, to being the PTA president, or to spending time with people who suck your energy.

  • to incorporate more things into your life that bring you joy.

  • to do something that pushes your edges and gets you out of your comfort zone.

  • to reject the ‘this is the way I’ve always been, and I can’t change now’ story.

  • how you want to show up for people.

  • how you respond (not react!) to situations.

(In case you’re wondering, not choosing is still a choice too. 😉 )


As you head into the thick of the holiday season, I invite you to think about how you want your holidays to feel and make a list of descriptive words that embody that feeling – peaceful, healthy, connected, love. Pick the one that speaks to you the loudest and write out a mantra. It could look something like this:


I choose peace over chaos.

I choose my health over sweets/drinking/not working out.

I choose to connect authentically with my friends and family.


Post your mantra where you will see it – on your computer screen, on your bathroom mirror, or even as a phone reminder. Then repeat it to yourself every morning. When you’re in a situation that challenges your mantra, repeat it to yourself again.


Then, let your choice guide your actions.


Remember to be gentle with yourself – becoming more intentional with your choices takes practice, and you won’t always get it right. As with anything that comes with personal growth, give yourself lots of space, grace, and compassion. When you falter, just pick yourself up and try again.
