Ok, drumroll please: 🥁 It’s time for the big reveal!


We’ve talked about why living with intention is so important in creating a life you love. As you move forward into 2024, taking time to reflect on – and choose – exactly what you want more of is a vital step!


You have (hopefully) completed your Values exercise (if not, here it is again – no judgment) 😉


Now it’s time to choose your word of intention for the year!


Still not sure? Try the following scenario on for size:


Pretend that you have just found out you only have 4 weeks left on this earth. (For the sake of the exercise, this won’t involve any dire circumstances, you’re not sick or suffering, and your family will be taken care of financially when you’re gone.) You just know that you only have 4 weeks left to do whatever it is that you haven’t gotten around to before now.


How would you spend your time?

  • Would you hang out with the gossipy moms who criticize everyone, or would you spend time with your family and people who lift you up? 

  • Would you complain about the fact you only have a month to live, or would you focus on adopting a positive attitude and being with what is?

  • Would you choose to worry endlessly about the future, or would you put your focus on the present?

  • Would you waste time on meaningless pursuits, or would you really prioritize each day?

  • Where would you spend your time? At the mall? In nature? At the beach? 

  • Would you travel? If so, where would you go and who would you take along? 

  • Would you reach out to those you love just to tell them how much they mean to you?


Give yourself some time to reflect on your answers. When you’re done, look at them and identify any common threads. For example:

  • Did you prioritize connection?

  • Did you choose to spend time in nature?

  • Did you choose presence over worrying about the future?


Keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers here. This is simply an exercise aimed at helping you dig a little deeper into what’s important to you.


Now, take your responses and reflections and check on how they align with the words you chose for your values. Looking at all these pieces together should help you start to form a picture of what you want more of in your life.


THAT, my friend, is the key to picking your word of intention for the coming year.


Don’t worry if you’re still not sure what your word should be. Just pick 2 or 3 options and sit with them for a few days. Which one really resonates in your gut? Which ones feel like they’re duplicitous or redundant? These questions might also help:

  • Do you want more joy?

  • Do you want more love?

  • Do you want more compassion?

  • Do you want more adventure?

  • Do you want more personal growth?

  • Do you want good health?

  • Do you want more connection?

  • Do you want to push your edges?


When you finally settle on your word, write it down with some variation of the following phrase:


In 2024 I choose more ______________.


Then, every time you find yourself faced with a choice in the coming months, consider whether or not it aligns with your intention. If not, take a pass.


The rest is in your hands. Once you set your intention, it’s up to you to take action to bring more of it into your life. Build it into your daily routine. Get some dates on the calendar. Find an accountability buddy to check in to see how you’re doing.
