5 Health Benefits of Being Grateful

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Have you noticed lately that a certain theme has been popping up all over the place in magazines, tv, and on social media?

Gratitude. The practice of being thankful or grateful.

Well, according to world-renowned psychologist Martin Seligman, gratitude is one of the 10 most positive emotions and is right up there with joy, serenity, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe, and love.

“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” —William Arthur Ward

It’s really about celebrating the small moments in your day that might otherwise go unnoticed...

That extra minute you decide to stay in a delicious, hot shower.

Being focused on how nice it feels to rub a scented cream on your skin.

Enjoying the last few morning moments in your comfy bed and noticing how soft your sheets feel.

And, just feeling so lucky and thankful for only that in the present moment.

But why is gratitude really considered such a powerful emotion? Because practicing gratefulness each and every day can actually be good for your health!

5 Health Benefits of feeling Grateful:

  1. Feeling grateful reduces stress and boosts your overall sense of well-being.

  2. Promotes stronger resilience against high-stress situations – positive emotions allow us to bounce back from stressful events and to find positive meaning in negative experiences.

  3. Increased Performance and Engagement – When you are feeling gratitude and joy at work for example and are able to handle stress with more ease, you are more likely to do a better job and therefore have higher job satisfaction and take pride in your work.

  4. Some studies have found a direct correlation between gratefulness and improved health and longevity.

  5. A positive outlook on a negative situation can lower blood pressure and promote a stronger immune system.

So, this month’s theme is going to center around conditioning ourselves to bask in being present and start to celebrate the small moments during your day that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Monday Mindshift

  1. Your morning exercise practice. Eg: First thing in the morning when you are drinking your coffee, become aware and present to all the things you are grateful for in that moment - the warmth of the cup in your hands, the smell of the coffee as you bring it up to your mouth, how beautiful the morning is, the birds chirping outside.

  2. Every night list 3 things you are grateful for that happened for you during the day. (Keep this going throughout the whole month)

This is one of the simplest ways to improve your mood and sense of well-being because when you shift to exploring gratitude it’s impossible to think negatively at the same time.

This week may gratitude make you present to the joy you have in your life.
