Your Magenta Monday Magic.
Lifequake: a major life change, from internal or external disruption, that precipitates personal evolution or rebirth.” Bruce Feiler, Life is in the Transitions.
For years I ignored my own internal whispers of discontent. I thought there was something wrong with me – why didn’t I love the life I had created? 😟
It wasn’t until I realized that maintaining the status quo was no longer tenable that I chose to do something: I moved out of my house, leaving my husband and 2 young kids.
It was the most painful thing that I’ve ever done.
It was my Lifequake.
But even though it felt like my heart had been shattered into a million pieces, deep down I knew it was what I needed to do so I could get back into alignment with my purpose and why I was here.
In the months that followed, my husband and I went to therapy, and I spent my time trying to get some clarity about who I was beyond being a mom. I read. I explored my interests.
I got curious.
As I navigated these transitions in life, I started to understand that I was evolving, and this process would take time. My identity was shifting in ways that were unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable, but I leaned into it.
Thankfully, about a year later, after many deep and difficult conversations, my husband and I reconciled and I moved back into the house.
It was a slow journey, and there was a lot of repair work to do. My kids were happy to have me home, but they were understandably tentative.
I continued exploring what was next for me. I spent early mornings sitting in the quiet – asking myself questions about what I was passionate about and writing out my answers. During this period, I reflected on how the transitions in life had reshaped my vision and what I could offer to the world.
Over time a picture began to form. I realized that I was really inspired by young kids who were making a difference in their communities, so I pulled on that thread. It occurred to me that others might be similarly inspired, and that there were not organizations focused on that area.
Ultimately I came up with the idea for Ripple Kids – a nonprofit seeking to inspire and empower kids to make a difference.
Don’t get me wrong, although I felt a spark of inspiration, the prospect of starting my own business also terrified me. The fear was real, and my brain whispered:
What if I fail? What will everyone think? Who do I think I am to start a business?
I alternated between total paralysis, and moments of clarity that kept me inching forward, despite the uncertainty of these transitions in life.
I’m happy to say that Ripple Kids launched in 2006, and in the 10 years that followed we engaged thousands of kids and helped hundreds of people (and animals!) in need. As I worked alongside my family at various events, I felt deep levels of satisfaction and pride. 🥰
For the first time in my life, I felt passion and purpose at a soul level.
In the shadow of the Lifequake – as painful as it was – I found the ‘compost’ necessary to fertilize my vision.
Monday Mindshift
It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.
Oftentimes it is only through the breakdown that we get a breakthrough. We’re dismantling something old, to create something new, much like trees shed their leaves in the fall to prepare for the season ahead.
Not every moment of truth comes with a massive disruption. Some transitions in life will require only subtle course corrections. These shifts can happen gradually, like a gentle breeze changing the direction of your sail, guiding you toward new opportunities.
Whatever it looks like, it will take you getting curious about your own truth, so you can determine where your passion and purpose will lead next. Embrace those transitions in life, for they often carry the seeds of your greatest growth and transformation.
