Mental Health Strategies: Overcoming Obstacles and Finding Clarity

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

“I can see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind, it’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright, sunshiny day.” Jimmy Cliff, I Can See Clearly Now

I was telling you last week about my unwelcome houseguest, the funk she’d put me in, and how gratitude helped me create enough space in my head to start digging into what was going on with me.

I found myself ready to talk to someone about what was happening, and luckily a good friend was coming to visit and we had a couple of days. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.⌚

One of the things I've learned about myself in the past couple of years is that I am an audio processor. Once I get a bit of distance from an experience, I find that talking it through with someone I trust is really helpful. This is one of my key mental health strategies.

Sometimes it’s my coach. Sometimes it’s my husband. Sometimes it’s a friend.

There is something so powerful about speaking words aloud to someone who can reflect back what they’re hearing. It’s as though it liberates those thoughts from my head, disempowering them, and creating space as they depart.

As I share – openly and vulnerably – I soon get to see that I’m not the only one who goes through this kind of thing.

With each conversation, I began to feel like my old self. I started to see hints of possibility for the future. I also kept on with my gratitude practice and continued to feel more and more grounded in the present.

As my guest started packing up her things in preparation to vacate the premises, I thanked her and the funk she brought with her, because I knew there was something to learn there. It may have been hard to see at first, but as I got curious, it started to become clear why this was happening for me.

The funk was there to allow me to practice a new set of skills.

It was there to help me ground more deeply in my gratitude practice.

It allowed me to recognize how good life is, and that when inevitable dips occur, I am empowered to create a life I love.

It also taught me that I am not a victim – that I have mental health strategies and tools I can use, even if it takes me a minute to find them.

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

If you’re finding yourself in a funk of your own, and what I’m describing feels familiar to you, don’t underestimate the power of sharing what you’re going through with someone you trust. This is one of the essential mental health strategies to consider.

Whether you open up to a therapist, a coach, your partner, or a close friend, there is power in vulnerability. You may find, as I did, that you don’t feel quite as alone with what you’re going through. The dark thoughts in your head may lose some of their weight as you speak them out loud. ‍💨

After you’ve spent some time with the supportive people in your life, reflect on the experience like I did, and you’ll likely find it comes naturally to feel gratitude for their presence in your life.

That gratitude will inevitably help to further boost your level of joy. Keep on with incorporating gratitude into your daily routine – you’re not at the mercy of your thoughts. You do have the power to shift what’s going on between your ears.

You’ve got this. ☺️

Bridget
