Living Authentically: Embrace Courage, Self-Compassion, and Patience

Updated: Jun 21

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

Living authentically can take many forms. It could be speaking up when you see an injustice or as life-altering as leaving your marriage.

What those two situations have in common is they involve you observing that something is out of alignment and choosing to take the steps necessary to get back on the path to your truth, which is living authentically. 👣

As you travel this journey, you’ll need equal parts courage, self-compassion, and patience (with yourself and others). There will be almost constant tension between who you’ve been up until this point and who you want to become.

There will be a push-pull between the ‘old’ you and the ‘new’ you who choose to show up differently. When that battle begins, it will be tempting to let yourself fall into doing the ‘same ol’ same ol’.’

It will take strength to resist that urge.

What can help is reminding yourself that you’re not waiting for life to just happen to you.

You’ve committed to creating a life that you love.

You’ll have your share of course corrections – and that’s where patience and self-compassion come in. You have to keep moving towards intentionally living your truth – again and again and again.

This year my intention has been to push my edges – to choose growth over stagnation.

Let me tell you, it’s been uncomfortable – even scary – at times! On our trip to Antarctica for example, I vowed to say ‘yes’ whenever I found myself wanting to say  ‘no’ to something.

That’s how I ended up plunging into the depths of an icy, 28º ocean in the middle of a snowstorm! Was I scared? Hell yes! Did I almost turn around and hightail it back to my room? About a dozen times! ❄️

But you know what? As uncomfortable as I was, I was more committed to pushing my edges.

And simply by taking that action, I was living authentically.

I was showing up as the version of me who wants to live a bigger life. And I have to say, as cold as it was, it also felt pretty damn good.

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

To maintain your resolve in those moments when the old you start battling the new you, get clear on these three questions – you might even try asking them every morning before your feet hit the floor:

  1. What is my truth?

  2. Am I committed to living my truth?

  3. What is the one next step I can take that will more closely align me with my truth?

And then, take time to reflect on a regular basis – looking back over your day or your week – to see whether anything is out of alignment with the person you’re aiming to become – the new you.

See if you can identify what’s out of alignment with your truth, and what action can you take to get back into alignment.

If you’re committed to living authentically, it will be uncomfortable. It will take ongoing reflection, examination, and course correction.

It won’t always feel great, but remember, every bit of discomfort you push through today, is an investment in the life satisfaction of future you.

Love💓,

Bridget
